# Altar SMP style plugins: build the same mechanics on your server

![A group of Minecraft players gathered around a glowing altar block](/assets/blog-community-xtOMT3T6.webp)

Altar SMP is one of the biggest Minecraft series running right now. It started on June 6, 2025, it gathers 57 content creators on one private server, and its official store puts the count at more than 10 million views on YouTube. The idea that carries the whole show is simple: legendary weapons, each one crafted on its own altar.

You cannot join that server. But the mechanics that make it fun to watch are exactly the kind of thing a plugin can bring to your own server: altars, one-of-a-kind weapons, content that arrives in waves, seasons, teams. This guide walks through each mechanic and hands you a prompt you can copy into Minax, adjust, and turn into a working plugin.

Minax is not affiliated with Altar SMP

Minax has no link with Altar SMP, its owners or its store. This is a fan guide. The series, its name and its weapons belong to their creators. The prompts below help you build your own weapons with your own names and your own abilities, not copies of theirs.

## What Altar SMP actually is

Altar SMP is a private, unscripted survival multiplayer server for content creators, owned by the YouTubers Epaxialfx and Naparizel. Its core rule: unique legendary weapons that each have to be crafted in their own altar. You do not just find a sword in a chest: you reach the right altar and craft a weapon nobody else on the server has.

The server moves forward in arcs. Each arc adds new legendary weapons and server events, and each arc has its own win conditions. The players who win an arc earn the right to design their own custom weapon. Season 1 ran through five arcs of weapons, with names like Bloodlust, Bone Blade, Frost Scythe, Hyperion, Nightpiercer and Knightfall. Season 2 started on April 28, 2026 with a full wipe of the world and of the Season 1 weapons, five new legendary weapons at launch, and 20 new creator members. The developers behind Season 2 are Invictable and Jpegisme.

That mix of scarcity, progression and rivalry is why so many people search for an Altar SMP plugin after watching. The good news: none of these mechanics needs a private server with 57 YouTubers. They need a plugin, and every one of them fits in a description you can write in plain English.

## What already exists to download

Before building anything, here is an honest map of what is already out there.

The official Altar SMP store lives on [MCModels](https://mcmodels.net/vendors/295/altarsmp). It sells two paid packs, Altar SMP Weapons Vol.1 and Vol.2, at a few dollars each, plus a free materials pack. The store also says the Altar SMP plugin is slowly being released as weapons from past seasons are removed from the server. So the official route exists, but it is paid and it arrives piece by piece.

Fans have filled the gaps. On Modrinth, a free [Arc 1 replica](https://modrinth.com/plugin/altar-smp-arc-1-plugin) with the five Arc 1 weapons and their altars has passed 38,000 downloads on Paper and Spigot 1.21.x. Other fan remakes cover more weapons or Arc 2, and on the Bedrock side a fan-made [Altar SMP addon](https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft-bedrock/addons/altar-smp) on CurseForge has passed 23,000 downloads. These are fan projects, not official releases, and most of them need a separate texture pack to look right.

The third row is the one this guide is about. Buying or downloading someone else's weapons means playing someone else's server. Describing your own means your players hunt for weapons nobody has ever seen in a video.

## Mechanic 1: one altar, one weapon

The altar is the heart of the whole concept. In your version, it is a special block placed by an admin, and it holds the recipe for exactly one legendary weapon. Players have to find it, learn what it wants, and bring the materials. Here is a prompt that builds that. Copy it, then change the block, the recipe and the names to yours.

Prompt

```
Make a plugin for Paper 26.1.2.
Add altars. When an admin runs /altar create sunblade while looking
at a lodestone, that lodestone becomes the altar of one weapon
called Sunblade.
When a player sneaks and right clicks the altar, open a menu that
shows the recipe: 4 diamond blocks, 2 blaze rods and 1 nether star.
If the player has all the items, take them and give the player the
Sunblade: a netherite sword named "Sunblade" in gold text, with a
glowing effect.
Only one Sunblade can exist on the server. If it was already
crafted, the altar menu says "The Sunblade has already been
claimed."
Admin commands: /altar create <name>, /altar remove <name> and
/altar list. Only admins with the permission altar.admin can use
them.
```

Make the hunt part of the game

The altar is only exciting if reaching it is a story. Put it somewhere dangerous, ask for materials that take real play time to gather, and let rumors do the rest. The hunt for a single weapon can carry your server for a whole week.

## Mechanic 2: legendary weapons with abilities

A legendary weapon is more than a renamed sword. It has abilities that trigger when you use it. One honest note here: the exact abilities of the official Altar SMP weapons are not published anywhere we could verify, so do not expect any plugin, including yours, to be a faithful copy. Invent your own. The pattern below is the one that works well in game: a main ability on right click, a second one while sneaking, and cooldowns so fights stay fair.

Prompt

```
Make a plugin for Paper 26.1.2.
Create a legendary sword called Sunblade. It is a netherite sword
named "Sunblade" in gold text with a glowing effect.
Right click ability: shoot a small fireball. Cooldown 8 seconds.
Show the remaining cooldown on the action bar.
Sneak plus right click ability: give the holder speed 2 and fire
resistance for 5 seconds. Cooldown 30 seconds.
Both abilities only work when the sword is in the main hand.
When the holder dies, the sword drops like a normal item so another
player can pick it up.
The sword never burns in fire or lava.
```

The last two lines matter more than they look. A one-of-a-kind weapon that disappears in lava is gone for the whole server, and a weapon that vanishes on death removes the best reason to fight its owner. Decide both rules on purpose, then write them in the prompt.

## Mechanic 3: arcs, content in waves

Altar SMP does not release everything at once. Each arc brings new weapons and new events, so the server keeps a reason to log in. You can run the same rhythm with a small gate system: every altar belongs to an arc, and an altar only works once its arc has begun.

Prompt

```
Make a plugin for Paper 26.1.2.
Add arcs. The server starts in arc 1. An admin runs /arc next to
move to the next arc.
When the arc changes, show a title on every player's screen saying
"Arc 2 has begun" with a dramatic sound.
Every altar from my altar plugin gets an arc number. An altar only
works if its arc number is the current arc or lower.
Add /arc info so players can see the current arc and how many
altars it has unlocked.
```

Tease the next arc

Announce the next arc a few days early with a mysterious chat message or a strange item drop. The wait between arcs is where the theories and the alliances happen.

## Mechanic 4: seasons and wipes

When Season 2 launched, the world and the Season 1 weapons were wiped, and everyone started again. A wipe itself is not a plugin job: you create a fresh world and everyone begins from zero. What a plugin can do is make the season feel like a season: track what happened, crown a winner, and keep a record before everything resets.

Prompt

```
Make a plugin for Paper 26.1.2.
Add seasons. /season shows everyone the current season number.
Track stats per player for the current season: player kills, deaths
and legendary weapons crafted.
Add /season top to show the 5 players with the most kills.
When an admin runs /season end, save every player's stats to a
file, announce the player with the most kills in chat as the season
champion, then reset all stats and raise the season number by one.
```

## Mechanic 5: teams and rivalries

A server full of one-of-a-kind weapons only turns into a story once players group up around them. Rivalries are what turn a weapon from an item into a threat. A small teams plugin is enough to start that on your server.

Prompt

```
Make a plugin for Paper 26.1.2.
Add teams. Commands: /team create <name>, /team invite <player>,
/team accept, /team leave. Maximum 5 players per team.
Players on the same team cannot hurt each other.
Show the team name in front of the player's name in chat, colored
with the team color.
Admins can run /team color <team> <color> to set a team's color.
```

## Give your weapons their own look

A legendary weapon that looks like a plain netherite sword is missing half the magic. In Minecraft, an item gets a custom look through a resource pack: a small file of images that the game loads, which your server can offer automatically when a player joins. No mods needed on the player's side.

Minax generates a 16x16 texture for your item, in the same pixel style as the rest of the game, and packs it into a resource pack together with the plugin. To be fully honest: the fan replicas above rely on custom weapon models, a separate craft that needs its own resource pack and extra dependencies, and that is not what a 16x16 texture is. But a unique 16x16 texture is exactly how vanilla Minecraft items look, it works on every client without extra tools, and it makes your Sunblade instantly recognizable in a hotbar, an inventory or a hand.

When you describe your weapon to Minax, describe its look too: the colors, the shape, the mood. A texture prompt like "a golden longsword with a sun-shaped guard and an orange glow" gives a much better result than "a cool sword".

## What a plugin cannot copy, honestly

A fair guide has to say this part out loud. A plugin gives you the rules of Altar SMP. It does not give you the show. What made the series huge is 57 creators filming, editing and telling stories on top of those rules. Your server will not have that audience on day one, and no download changes it.

- **The people and the story.** The drama, the betrayals and the alliances come from players, not from code. A plugin sets the stage. Your community writes the script.
- **The exact official weapons.** Their precise abilities are not publicly documented in a form we could verify, and their designs belong to their creators. Build your own arsenal instead of chasing a copy.
- **The custom weapon models.** The fan replicas ship models that need their own resource pack and dependencies to display. A 16x16 texture gives your weapon a unique look the vanilla way, and that is the part Minax automates.
- **The event moments.** Each arc on the real server comes with server events, and events take people to run them. A plugin can announce and gate content, but the best events on a small server are the ones an admin hosts live.

None of this is a reason not to build. It is the reason to build your own version instead of a replica: the mechanics are proven, and everything on top of them will be yours.

### Build your first legendary weapon

Describe the weapon, its altar and its recipe in plain English. Minax generates the plugin and a 16x16 texture for the item, then lets you try everything on a real online test server before you install it.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is there an official Altar SMP plugin I can download?

There is no complete free official plugin. The official Altar SMP store on MCModels sells weapon packs called Altar SMP Weapons Vol.1 and Vol.2, plus a free materials pack, and it says the plugin is slowly being released as weapons from past seasons leave the server. Fans have also published free replicas on Modrinth and SpigotMC, split by arc or by season.

### Can I join the real Altar SMP server?

No. Altar SMP is a private server for invited content creators. The fan wiki counts 57 creator members, and 20 new members joined for Season 2. The way to play something like it is to run the mechanics on your own server, which is what this guide is about.

### Will my weapons work exactly like the ones in the videos?

They will work like you decide, not like the show. The exact abilities of the official weapons are not published in a form we could verify, so the prompts in this guide give each weapon abilities you invent yourself. That is honestly more fun: the winners of each arc on the real server get to design their own weapon too.

### Do my players need mods to see the custom weapon textures?

No mods. Item textures travel in a resource pack, which is a small file of images the game loads. Your server can offer the pack automatically when a player joins, and the player just clicks accept. Minax generates the 16x16 texture and the pack for you.

### How much does Minax cost?

You get 5 free credits when you create an account. Generating plugins needs a subscription, which starts at 14.99 euros per month. Every plugin you generate can be tested on a real online server before you install it on yours.

Keep going: the full tour of [SMP mechanics with a prompt for each](/smp-plugins-minecraft), the technical guide to [custom items](/blog/custom-minecraft-item) and the one to [custom commands](/blog/create-minecraft-command). The facts about the series in this article come from the [fan wiki](https://altarsmp.miraheze.org/wiki/Main_Page) and the official [MCModels store](https://mcmodels.net/vendors/295/altarsmp), checked in August 2026. Minax targets Minecraft 1.8 to 26.2 on Paper, Spigot, Bukkit and Folia.
